Making a career move in any circumstance is a time for most candidates that is fraught with excitement but also apprehension. When this decision is coupled with an international move which combines uprooting your life and sometimes that of your partner and family the choice you make in terms of a choosing a recruitment partner becomes even more important.

It is essential that you are putting your career and your relocation in the hands of someone that you can trust and respect.

I have recently seen several candidates who have not had a very pleasant experience dealing with Recruitment Agencies when considering an International move so thought it would be an opportune time to jot down a few pointers to help candidates through this process.

Your Agent should be someone who gives you up to date, relevant market knowledge who gives you constructive career advice. When looking to relocate internationally we highly recommend candidates using an Agency that has a local presence in the jurisdiction they are seeking to move to. Nothing beats being on the ground and you will usually find you have a much higher success rate working with an Agency who has established relationships with their local clients.

Don’t be afraid of asking your Consultant about their background and that of the Agency.
You should be asking questions like –

Is the Agency a specialist Legal Recruiter?
Have they worked in the market you are looking to move to?
Do they have a local office?
What is the background of the consultant who you will be working with?
What is the nature of the relationship with their clients?
