Under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997, a New Zealand solicitor may be registered as an Australian solicitor. Registration must be made to the local registry for the High Court in which you intend to practise.

Requalifying in New Zealand

Foreign lawyers admitted in countries excluding Australia are assessed by the New Zealand Law Society to determine their eligibility and the requirements for admission in New Zealand. You will need to have your current qualifications assessed by the: New Zealand Council of Education

Your academic qualifications, professional training and experience and knowledge of and use of the English language will be assessed. Admission may be subject to the completion of a New Zealand LLB degree, a course in Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility, the New Zealand Law and Practice Examination and an English language proficiency test.
