Current Situation

With Australia hosting one of the highest number of Litigious cases in the world most law firms seek a strong Litigation background when employing staff. More recently due to the economic climate we have seen an increase in Insolvency, Insurance. Employment and IR law and a downturn in Corporate, Banking and Finance and Property law.
The market is showing signs of recovery and is expected to pick up significantly early to mid 2010 at which time a greater number of roles in all areas of private practice are expected to be in demand.

At the moment, our clients are looking to recruit local candidates first and foremost which makes sponsoring legal professionals a thing of the past (for now).

Salaries

Salaries in Australia have over the last year remained fairly stable due to the global downturn with a number of firms implenting salary freezes due to market conditions and only slight increases for exsting lawyers moving into a higher career bracket.

The Australian financial year runs from July the 1st to June 30th.

The Market

The Australian legal market is comprised of top tier, mid tier and boutique firms. There are six top tier firms most with a strong international presence. Mid tier firms can be divided into upper mid tier and mid tier. Boutique firms offer specialised services including Corporate, Family and Immigration law.

Other Requirements

Lawyers looking to work in Australia should be ideally Australian qualified or have been admitted in other common law jurisdictions. International transactions experience is highly regarded and candidates with experience working in internationally reputed firms is preferred.
