The following information is given in order to provide you with a generalised overview of the criteria required for this visa. If you are the fiancé (e) or proposed civil partner of a British citizen or a person who is settled in the UK, you are able to apply for permission to enter the UK as a fiancé (e) or proposed civil partner.

If you are outside the UK Your settled partner must be:
  • Currently living and settled in the UK; or
  • Returning to the UK with you to live here permanently.

Eligibility

In order for this application to be successful all the following criteria must be met:
  1. Both you and your fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner must be at least 21 years old (or 18 years old if either of you is a serving member of HM Forces);
  2. You plan to marry or register a civil partnership within a reasonable time (usually six months);
  3. You plan to live together permanently after you are married or have registered a civil partnership;
  4. You have met each other;
  5. Until you are married or have registered a civil partnership, there is somewhere for you and any dependants to live without help from public funds; and,
  6. You and any dependants can be supported without working or needing help from public funds.

Duration of Visa

If you are granted permission to enter the UK in the category of fiancé (e) or proposed civil partner, you will be given permission to stay here for six months, during this time you are not able to work. After you have married or registered your civil partnership, you can apply to remain in the UK as the husband, wife or civil partner of a settled person. With this status you are able to work in the UK. Once this application is approved you will be granted leave to remain in the UK for two years, 28 days prior to this visa expiring you will be able to apply for permanent status in the UK.
